About the Project

As private studio teachers, we are always looking for more representative music for students, and while there is plenty available for advanced players, resources for beginner and intermediate players are limited. To fill in the gap, our team is creating a method that teaches the cello using authentic folk tunes from historically excluded traditions and melodies from works by BIPOC and women composers. This method will be a graduated set of books, ranging from beginner to advanced, that will include solo pieces, ensemble works, piano accompaniments, and recordings.

The goal of the series is to serve as an accessible resource for students and teachers, with all the scores graded and in one place. We hope it will also serve as a jumping-off point, inspiring teachers to seek out more music by these composers and from these traditions. In addition to being a great resource, these books will teach students from an early age about prominent composers/folk songs from a variety of backgrounds/cultures/time periods, allow students to recognize and believe that anyone can make music, and allow students to play music that is representative of themselves, their heritage, and the cultures around them.
